The traditional barrel tapping** ceremony marks the 540th official start of the Cranger Kirmes in Herne this Friday. Herne's Mayor Frank Dudda (SPD) will have the Deputy Minister President Mona Neubaur (Greens) by his side in the festival tent around late afternoon (2:00 PM). After the barrel tapping, pop singer Vanessa Mai is expected to take the stage.

The event organizer expects over four million visitors on the area by the Rhine-Herne Canal by August 11th. It is the largest family funfair in Germany and the largest folk festival in North Rhine-Westphalia, emphasized the city marketing Herne. Some 500 showmen are involved. The fairground with carousels, Ferris wheel, and more has already begun on Thursday afternoon.
