After a sudden attack on a federal police officer in Mönchengladbach, investigators are treating the incident as an attempted murder. A 21-year-old approached three officers from behind at the main train station, concealing a hammer until he suddenly struck it towards the head of a 27-year-old officer, police and prosecutors reported.

The officer managed to dodge the attack at the last moment but was still struck on the upper body, resulting in minor injuries. The 21-year-old suspect was then overpowered and arrested.

The suspect, a Russian national with no previous police record, tested negative for drugs and alcohol. He is currently refusing to comment on the charges or any possible motive. Prosecutors have classified the attack as cowardly and are treating it as an attempted murder. The man is set to appear before a judge later today.

A three-person federal police team was conducting a routine check in the main hall of the train station when the 21-year-old approached them. After his arrest, the man collapsed at a police station and had to be treated by emergency services. A homicide unit has been assigned to the case.

The investigation into the attempted murder in Mönchengladbach highlights the increasing concern over crime in public places. Despite the suspect's refusal to disclose a motive, the cowardly attack on the police officer underscores the need for enhanced safety measures.
