Alaska man fatally attacked by moose while photographing newborn calves

A guy named Dale Chorman was hanging out with a friend in the city of Homer, Alaska, when they stumbled upon a mama moose and her two tiny moose babies. The Alaska Department of Public Safety reported this information.

Apparently, Dale and his buddy were trying to snap some photos of the moose calves when the mother moose started attacking Dale.

A spokesperson for the Department of Public Safety, Austin McDaniel, filled CNN in on the situation. He stated in an email on Tuesday that a female moose with her two kids charged at the two men and even kicked one of them. The other man managed to escape injury.

Dale's body has been sent for a medical examiner's report at the Alaska State Medical Examiner's Office. CNN tried to get more details from the medical examiner.

According to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, a small adult female moose can weigh up to 800 pounds and reach a height of 6 feet.

When it comes to protecting their young, female moose won't hold back, McDaniel explained. "A cow moose with calves will not hesitate to attack if someone gets too close."

He also added, "The Alaska Wildlife Troopers advise Alaskans to stay away from moose calves and not try to take their photos or pet them. There's likely a cow moose nearby."

Homer is situated approximately 220 miles south of Anchorage on Alaska's Kenai Peninsula.
