After a prolonged absence, Heinz Hoenig is set to return.

Actor Heinz Hoenig is set for a short-term medical release following over a century's worth of stay in the ICU, as shared by his spouse Annika Kärsten-Hoenig.

- After a prolonged absence, Heinz Hoenig is set to return.

Actor Heinz Hoenig appeared to be in good shape up until January, even managing to tackle the trials of the jungle camp. However, his health took a drastic turn for the worse. Towards the end of April, he was admitted to a hospital in Berlin. This was followed by over a hundred days in intensive care, a coma, and multiple surgeries. At times, his condition was grave, and his wife Annika Kärsten-Hoenig stood by his side.

There's now a glimmer of optimism amidst the health and financial woes (Hoenig is uninsured). As per Bild, citing Hoenig's wife, the actor is apparently gearing up for discharge. She recently shared a picture of herself with her husband on her private Instagram, outside the hospital.

Heinz Hoenig is currently being fed artificially. Since the start of the year, he has lost a significant amount of weight. Bild reports that he's finding it easier to breathe on his own, and muscle mass is being regained.

The daily newspaper quotes his wife as saying: "This week, the first 'discharge attempt' is scheduled: Nighttime ventilation will be stopped. Depending on the progress, further steps will be taken. One of the goals is to remove the tracheal cannula before he can return home for the first time."

Hoenig's health crisis is not over with the planned homecoming. He still has a major aorta operation ahead, for which he's currently too weak. Returning to his own home with his wife and children is supposed to help him gather strength for the major intervention.

Half a million euros in expenses - and counting

The financial struggles continue unabated. As Annika Kärsten-Hoenig told Bild, they are reliant on full medical and nursing coverage for Hoenig's care. She recently submitted applications to the social cost carrier, she said. If this falls through, the planned discharge cannot proceed as planned. She estimates the total expenses so far to be around half a million euros.

Kärsten-Hoenig intends to take care of her husband herself. Being a trained nurse, she can manage his basic care, she said.

A fundraising campaign has amassed 180,000 euros so far - in addition, some German celebrities have pledged financial support for Hoenig, including Til Schweiger (find out more here).
