Acquiring cocaine in Hamburg is a significant offence.

Down Under Dilemma: Following Australian athlete Tom Craig's apprehension for supposedly acquiring cocaine at the Olympics in Paris, the Australian Hockey Association imposes a year-long ban on him. Whether Craig will be eligible to play for Hamburg is yet to be clarified.

The Australian hockey star, Tom Craig, received a 12-month suspension after being implicated in drug-related offenses at the Paris Olympics, as declared by the Australian Hockey Federation. Craig must serve at least six months of the sentence, with the remaining six months suspended on a probationary basis.

The statement read, "Craig is mandated to complete mandatory training and education programs as part of his punishment." The statement further specified that Craig had "access to all athlete support services through our program" and would continue to utilize them. "His well-being remains our highest priority."

Craig, currently contracted to the Hamburger Polo Club since this season, will still be part of the Australian team for the 2025 Games. The Hamburg club declined to comment on the matter to SID at the time of writing. It remains dubious whether Craig will also be suspended from the Hockey Bundesliga. Initially, the Hamburg club extended its backing to Craig.

Craig: "Regrettable Blunder"

Craig was briefly detained during the Olympics and spent a night in custody but was eventually released without any fines or penalties. Craig later acknowledged that he had made a "regrettable blunder."

Apologizing for the events of the past 24 hours, Craig, who has represented his country for ten years and won Olympic silver with the Australians in 2021, stated, "I take complete responsibility for my actions. They are not aligned with the values of my loved ones, teammates, friends, the sport, and the Australian Olympic team." Craig departed from the Olympic Village after his indiscretion and was barred from attending the closing ceremony of the Games. Just a few days prior to his arrest in Paris, Craig and his squad had lost to the ultimate Olympic champions from the Netherlands in the quarterfinals of the hockey tournament.

Craig's indiscretion at the Olympics involved drugs, as he admitted to making a "regrettable blunder" related to substance use. Following this incident, there are questions about whether Craig will also face suspension from the Hockey Bundesliga in Germany.
