In a severe rear-end collision on the A61 motorway near Boppard (Rhein-Hunsrück district), a 72-year-old man was seriously injured. He was taken to a hospital by emergency services, police reported.

According to the reports, a 75-year-old man was driving a trailer with a car loaded on it northbound on the A61 in the night. For unknown reasons, the trailer's coupling broke off during the drive, leaving the trailer stationary on the left lane. In the darkness, a following 72-year-old failed to notice the unlit trailer and collided with it with his car. He sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

The total material damage to all involved vehicles was in the lower five-figure range. The affected lane was closed for four hours due to the accident.

Investigations are underway to determine if any other vehicles were affected by the trailer's sudden stop. Despite the consulting other experts, the reason for the coupling's failure remains a mystery.
