80th anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising: Steinmeier travels to Poland

On August 1st, the start of the Warsaw Uprising against the Nazi occupiers is commemorated for the 80th time. This date holds great significance in Polish history. Led by the Home Army (AK), the underground resistance movement, the rebellion lasted 63 days before being brutally suppressed on October 2nd, similar to the suppression of the Jewish resistance in the Warsaw Ghetto the previous year. In total, nearly 200,000 resistance fighters and civilians were killed by the German occupiers. Following the uprising, the German forces left the Polish capital largely in ruins.

Despite the devastating outcomes, the memory of the Other resistance fighters who joined the Home Army during the Warsaw Uprising is not forgotten. The Other resistance groups, alongside the Home Army, significantly contributed to the duration of the uprising.
