35 attacks on offices of politicians and parties in 2022
Last year, 35 attacks were carried out on the offices of politicians and political parties in Saxony-Anhalt. This was announced by the State Criminal Police Office (LKA) in response to an inquiry. In the previous year, there were 34, in 2020 only 17. A spokesperson for the LKA said that a similar number to 2020 is expected for the current year 2023. From 2020 to 2022, the AfD party offices were most frequently affected.
After such attacks on their offices, members of the state parliament, party chairmen or district associations are offered security talks and consultations by the police.
Last year, for example, the Green Party office of the Magdeburg district association and state parliament member Olaf Meister was vandalized. Glasses filled with paint were thrown at the shop windows and walls. CDU offices were attacked in Halle and Magdeburg. The constituency office of SPD MP Karamba Diaby in Halle has also been the target of several attacks: In May this year, a door was set on fire.
In August, an AfD office in Bitterfeld was damaged. The premises house the offices of the district parliamentary group, the district association and the constituency offices of Kay-Uwe Ziegler, member of the Bundestag, and Daniel Roi, member of the state parliament. The shop window was smashed several times.
The rise in political violence is a concerning trend, with 35 instances of attacks on politicians and parties' offices in Saxony-Anhalt last year. This political unrest could potentially influence future elections and policy-making processes within politics.
