In the upcoming winter semester, 124 future medical students will commence their studies in Bavaria, committing to work as a rural physician afterwards. According to Health Minister Judith Gerlach (CSU), the selection process for the Bavarian rural doctor and public health service quota is complete: "145 applicants can look forward to a medical studies place in the upcoming winter semester through the Bavarian rural doctor and public health service quota." 21 places went to candidates who will work in the public health service after graduation.

426 applications received

"I'm delighted that more and more young people are discovering these exciting fields. They make a significant contribution to a sustainable healthcare system in Bavaria," said Gerlach. The interest in the study places was high: "We received 426 applications. This shows that many young medical students want to settle in Bavaria and work as general practitioners or public health officers."

Applicants must go through a two-stage selection process. This considers a study aptitude test, possession of a vocational qualification in a healthcare profession, the duration of professional activity in this field, and the type and duration of suitable voluntary or honorary activities.

Not all criteria must be met for an application. A second part of the selection process also includes selection interviews.

61 percent of future rural doctors are women

The average age of the students starting for the rural doctor quota this year is 23 years; 61 percent are female and 39 percent male. The successful candidates predominantly come from Bavaria (87 percent).

For the public health service quota, the average age is 24 years. Again, the majority of the students are female (81 percent) and come from Bavaria (76 percent).

The rural doctor quota provides that up to 5.8 percent of all medical study places in Bavaria are reserved for applicants who want to work as rural general practitioners for at least ten years. Since its introduction in 2020, this has already been declared by 434 students.

The public health service quota reserves up to one percent of Bavarian medical study places according to the same principle.
