Religion - Zieschang: Jewish places of worship enrich Saxony-Anhalt

Before the ceremonial opening of the new synagogue building in Magdeburg, Minister of the Interior Tamara Zieschang emphasized the enrichment of Saxony-Anhalt through Jewish places of worship. "The new Weill Synagogue was opened in Dessau on October 22, 2023 and the new synagogue in Magdeburg will open this Sunday. Within just a few weeks, Saxony-Anhalt will be enriched by two Jewish places of worship, and Jewish life will find space for new development," said the CDU politician on Friday. "This is a gift after the right-wing extremist attack on the Jewish synagogue in Halle on October 9, 2019, which was a turning point for the state."

The Minister of the Interior also emphasized the obligation of all authorities in the country to protect Jewish life and to resolutely counter any form of anti-Semitism. "The security of Israel and the protection of Jewish life in Germany is a German reason of state and a shared obligation."

On Friday afternoon, the Torah was brought into the new building in Magdeburg, officially turning it into a synagogue. Many Magdeburg residents lined the path from the memorial to the former synagogue to the new building. The Torah is the Holy Scripture of the Jews. It contains several hundred commandments and prohibitions and forms the basis of the Jewish religion.

The new synagogue provides the synagogue community with a new home some 85 years after the destruction of the old Jewish place of worship. The building, which ultimately cost 7.6 million euros, is the result of decades of commitment by the citizens of Magdeburg. Magdeburg's old synagogue was destroyed by citizens of the city during the November pogroms in 1938 and later blown up.
