Groundbreaking Developments - Wismar Gets a Center for Space Technology Start-Ups

The Ministry of Economics has allocated 150,000 euros to create a founder center in Wismar, concentrating on companies with a space-focus. This news was revealed on Thursday. "Mecklenburg-Vorpommern boasts a lengthy history of aviation and tradition," shared Economics Minister Reinhard Meyer (SPD) at the International Aviation and Space Exhibition in Berlin. "Post-turnaround, the state has become an attractive destination for the aerospace sector." The ESA Business Incubation Centre (BIC) Northern Germany will establish its new foundation in Wismar. "Moving forward, start-ups in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern with space-related emphasis will receive administrative, commercial, and technical support through the Innovation Port Wismar, in alliance with the University of Wismar and Research GmbH Wismar."

The ESA BIC Northern Germany incubator of the European Space Agency (ESA) is one of 29 incubators for business start-ups in Europe. This establishment aims to assist start-ups with access to ESA funding programs.

"By setting up this establishment, we are contributing to the implementation of the new space policy initiated by the federal government in 2023, where the emphasis is on private-sector initiatives in space," stated Meyer. "By working together with companies, we can explore space, monitor environmental changes on Earth, and offer critical infrastructure for satellite communication and navigation. These future subjects we aim to back."
