Grape cultivation - Winemakers remain hopeful despite encountering rainfall.

Even though the corn is very damp and there was rain in June, Franken vineyard owners are feeling hopeful about their crops. The damage done to vine growers by the frost is also conveniently being overshadowed by the rapid growth of their plants because of the warm temperature. Michael Bock, the spokesperson for the Franconian Winegrowers' Association in Würzburg, emphasized this point.

Regardless, there's a lot of manual labor that must be done in the vineyard to stop infections from happening. The cooler nights are causing a small delay in budding.

Pest control has become a grave concern since there's a chance of fungal diseases, such as false mildew (Peronospora), arising. Many amateur gardeners are familiar with false mildew on strawberries. It spread throughout leaves and berries three years ago after a soggier than usual spring. Organic winemakers reported up to 80 percent failure on their vines in some areas while others successfully fought it off using either aggressive leaf trimming or plant disease treatments.

Not only are false mildew and downy mildew, but also gray mold, deemed the biggest threats to the vineyard. To ensure a healthy harvest in the fall, vineyards with disease issues are treated with plant protection agents. However, less plant protection is required for disease-resistant grape varieties (also known as Piwi varieties).

Franconia is Germany's primary wine-growing region, occupying 98% of more than 6,400 hectares farmed land. Here, there are nearly 2,900 winemakers.
