UEFA reacts drastically to questionable PSG penalty

Mbappé scores, UEFA reacts: The controversial penalty in the match between PSG and Newcastle United has drastic consequences. The responsible video assistant Tomasz Kwiatkowski is suspended for one match by UEFA. Newcastle legend Alan Shearer is furious.

Following the controversial penalty decision in stoppage time of the Champions League match between Paris St. Germain and Newcastle United (1:1), the video assistant Tomasz Kwiatkowski has been suspended for one match by UEFA. The Pole was also due to assist at Wednesday's Group D match between Real Sociedad and RB Salzburg (9pm/ DAZN and live ticker on ntv.de), but will now not be used there.

At the match in Paris, referee Szymon Marciniak from Poland initially did not award a penalty after an alleged handball by Newcastle's Valentino Livramento, but was then asked to the touchline by Kwiatkowski to view the images. The referee then decided otherwise and superstar Kylian Mbappe (90+8) took the ensuing penalty to make it 1-1.

Marciniak is regarded as one of the best referees in the world; the Pole also refereed the World Cup final in Qatar. He would probably have been more correct with his original decision: "For me, play on would have been the better decision, as the player gets the ball to his hand but makes a natural movement," said Lutz Wagner, the head referee of the top German referees.

The video assistant had intervened even though Livramento had received a cross from former Dortmund player Ousmane Dembélé from very close range, first to the upper body and then bouncing off the arm. Newcastle coach Eddie Howe described the whistle, which probably cost group rivals Borussia Dortmund an early group win, as a "bad decision" after the game. England's former international striker Alan Shearer found clearer words: "Do me a fucking favor and stop it. That's a load of shit," commented the former Newcastle United striker.
