The consumption of green asparagus is growing in popularity. - The asparagus association feels content with the current season.

Asparagus farmers in Brandenburg's primary growing area around Beelitz, southwest of Potsdam, are content with the end of their season. As the Beelitzer Asparagus Association's chairperson, Jürgen Jakobs, told dpa in Potsdam, "It was a pleasant asparagus year." Green asparagus, even without peeling, is increasingly popular among consumers today.

The asparagus season spans approximately twelve weeks. It commences with the onset of spring and typically concludes on St. John's Day, June 24th. In the southern regions of Germany, the harvest has already ceased in certain places due to torrential rain and flooded fields, according to Jakobs.

Jakobs anticipates that Brandenburg's asparagus harvest this season will amount to around 20 million kilograms (20,000 tons). This is similar to the yield in 2023. In the Beelitzer area alone, farmers will have gathered approximately 10 million kilograms by season's end.

Asparagus is a vital vegetable crop in Brandenburg, produced almost everywhere under plastic. This low-calorie vegetable has a high status in Germany, causing several chefs to devote a separate asparagus menu to it in the spring.

The asparagus season progressed early in Brandenburg this year owing to favorable weather conditions. The first asparagus stalks from local farming became available at the end of March. According to Jakobs, "Demand started to soar in mid-April." High-quality asparagus by the kilo was sold for 10 to 12 euros in April. The producers deemed the price level acceptable. Now, in the final weeks of the season, sales are gradually decreasing. "We're relieved if there's still a market for it."
