Sportsman of the year - "Target on the back": Basketball players await US stars
As the newly crowned Team of the Year, World Cup hero Andreas Obst set the tone for the German basketball team for 2024. "We now have the target on our backs, we are now the hunted. It won't be easy, but we definitely have the quality to be able to determine that ourselves," said Obst at the winners' press conference late on Sunday evening. With the World Championship title in Manila, the team led by captain Dennis Schröder has not only qualified for the Olympics in Paris, but is also one of the favorites there.
Pictures of the sensational semi-final victory against the USA were shown once again at the Kurhaus in Baden-Baden. In the journalists' vote, Schröder and Co. finished well ahead of the ice hockey silver medallists and the field hockey world champions. "We made Germany proud," said Schröder, who was connected live from Toronto via video link. The 30-year-old made the audience smile with his witty demeanor.
Three-point specialist Obst expressed his anticipation for a new edition against the USA. "Of course it's even more exciting when these megastars show up. For some of them, like LeBron James or Stephen Curry, it will be their last time on Olympic soil. To have the opportunity again is huge. It's every kid's dream. To be pushed around a bit by them is quite funny," said Obst.
Superstars James and Curry have already signaled their interest in the games in France. Shortly before the Olympic tournament (July 27 to August 11), Olympic champions USA and world champions Germany will meet for a test match in London on July 22 (8 p.m.).
ZDF sports director Yorck Polus indicated in Baden-Baden that he was interested in this match. At the World Cup in Asia, only the final against Serbia was shown live on ZDF. The memorable semi-final against the US star ensemble was only broadcast in Germany by Magentasport.
