Soccer - Süle fights for a regular place at BVB
Coach Edin Terzic believes that international Niklas Süle is well on his way back into Borussia Dortmund's starting line-up: "Niklas had to be patient. But we knew that if he stayed hard-working, if he stepped on the gas, we could always rely on him. Now is the time when we need him. Now is the time when he wants to take his chance," said the Dortmund soccer coach ahead of the final Champions League preliminary round match against Paris Saint-Germain this Wednesday (9pm/DAZN).
With regular starter Julian Ryerson injured, Marius Wolf in danger of missing out and Thomas Meunier not registered for the Champions League, Süle is likely to start for Borussia, who have already qualified for the round of 16, in the final match for the group win. With a three-point lead over the runners-up from France, BVB will only need a draw. As a right-back, Süle would probably have to deal with superstar Kylian Mbappé most of the time.
As a substitute in last Saturday's 3-2 draw against Leipzig, the burly defender even scored a goal and came close to equalizing in the closing stages. "Unfortunately, Niklas was out for a long time after the international break due to his illness. However, he was able to train again last week. He put in a good performance against Leipzig," said Terzic.
Süle made the switch from FC Bayern to BVB in the summer of 2022 with great ambitions, but has often had to make do with the reserve role in recent months. Mats Hummels and Nico Schlotterbeck were usually given preference in central defense. This led to speculation that the 28-year-old was considering a move to another club. However, Terzic would not be happy about that and would further limit his personnel alternatives in defense: "We know that the season is still very long and will always bring new challenges."
