Stralsund breaks away from Fosen due to Volkswerft-related reasons.

The branch of Norwegian shipbuilder Fosen Yards has fallen short of expectations, according to the Hanseatic city. Nevertheless, municipal officials maintain a hopeful outlook for the region's future.

Fosen Stralsund GmbH, the entity leasing the substantial shipyard facility in Stralsund, hasn't achieved the expected progress. Consequently, Stralsund is choosing to disassociate itself from this company.

Stralsund, a Hanseatic city, has dissolved its lease agreement with Fosen Werft GmbH early for their large shipbuilding facility at the ex-Volkswerft Stralsund. The city administration disclosed that despite diligent endeavors, Fosen failed to draw in the anticipated volume of ship and steel construction projects to Stralsund or meet the projected employment quotas. "Given these circumstances, the city has opted to end the lease agreement ahead of schedule," they declared.

Following the bankruptcy of MV Werften in 2023, Stralsund took charge of the shipyard within the Hanseatic city and spearheaded the development of a maritime commercial area. Initially, Fosen played a significant role at the site, including the management of the large shipbuilding hall.

No vacancy worries

According to the city administration, leaving ties with Fosen offers fresh opportunities. "We are optimistic that we'll secure new associates swiftly who will capitalize on the location's benefits," expressed Mayor Alexander Badrow (CDU). "In the upcoming phase, we'll prioritize project-based work that leverages existing successful collaborations at the site." Presently, about 20 organizations operate at the site, including Ostseestaal, Premator, Strela Shiprepair, Sottmann Scaffolding, Ekato Nord, and Steamergy.

In February, Fosen Yard AS, based in Norway, filed for bankruptcy. Carsten Stellamanns, the managing director of Fosen Stralsund GmbH, had shared at the time that the Stralsund facility remained unaffected. The insolvent entity in Norway wasn't part of the group, but a separate entity responsible for managing the shipyard there.

The early termination of the lease agreement by Stralsund opens up opportunities for attracting new partners in the future. With the city's focus on project-based work and leveraging existing collaborations, the future of the maritime commercial area looks promising.
