Spanish administration supports South Africa's ICJ grievance.
Spain joins the legal dispute initiated by South Africa against Israel's actions in the Gaza Strip at the International Court of Justice (ICJ). The chief objective is to end the conflict and work towards a two-state solution, asserted Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares on a Thursday. Spain acknowledged a Palestinian state along with Norway and Ireland a week prior to this.
Chile had joined the South African lawsuit mere days before. Chilean President Gabriel Boric condemned the "disastrous humanitarian crisis" in Gaza and demanded a strong response from the global community.
The ICJ in The Hague has been exploring a complaint lodged in December, in which South Africa accuses Israel of "genocide" in the Gaza Strip. In January, the court instructed Israel to employ each and every measure available to it to avert actions related to "genocide" in its standoff with the Hamas in the Gaza Strip. In May, the court also advocated a cessation to the Israeli military operation in Rafah in southern Gaza Strip.
Fighters from Hamas and other militant groups perpetrated a gigantic assault against Israel from the Gaza Strip on Oct 7, which as per Israeli statistics, resulted in 1,194 deaths. Additionally, 251 hostages were captured in the Gaza Strip. As per the Israeli government, 120 hostages are still being held by Hamas, and 41 of them are reportedly deceased.
As a response to the widespread assault, Israel has been staging a substantial military operation in the Gaza Strip since then. As per the Hamas-controlled health ministry which cannot be independently verified, more than 36,580 people have been killed up to this point.
