Fascination: Will Renault 4 / 5 bring back success? - Soon in electric

When you think of Renault, young classics such as the first Twingo, a Clio, the wacky Avantime or the practical family all-purpose weapon Kangoo come to mind. If you look a little further back in the rear-view mirror and look at the history, you can hardly avoid an R4 or R5, and it is precisely these two that are to be given an electric makeover. "The Renault 5 E-Tech Electric is a cult icon designed for the modern age. With its cheerful design and new-generation technologies, it aims to make electric vehicles more affordable in Europe," says Fabrice Cambolive, CEO of the Renault brand. Anyone who has already got an appetite for the electric Renault 5 will have to be patient, as the new version with a plug will not be on sale until autumn 2024. The new Renault 4 and a new entry-level electric model for less than 20,000 euros, which currently bears the internal designation "Legend" and is expected to consume only 10 kWh per 100 kilometers, will follow in 2025. Success should not be long in coming - from 2025, the Renault electric unit Ampere wants to be in the black and achieve an operating margin of ten percent from 2030.

Despite large models with a strong image, such as the Vel Satis or Renault 30, Renault is considered a French brand that stands for cars that are as compact as they are affordable. An electric Renault 5 E-Tech is intended to fill precisely this currently largely unfilled gap in order to win new customers for the brand's rhombus and electromobility. As the technology of the 3.92-metre-long electric model has nothing in common with its history and the vehicle, which will be officially unveiled at the end of February 2024, will have larger dimensions for reasons of comfort and crash safety, its design is of central importance. The front, flanks and proportions in particular are intended to ensure the incomparable Renault 5 charm that delighted fans back in the 1970s and 1980s. The LED headlights are a key design element, as they are intended to be reminiscent of the 1972 commercial "The Adventures of Supercar".

The flared fenders are also intended to emphasize the sporty character of the Renault 5 as an electric version and are at least remotely reminiscent of the chubby-cheeked R5 Turbo cornering car. Instead of turbo power, there is an electric motor for prices starting at 25,000 euros, which is fed by a 52 kWh battery pack that should provide a range of 400 kilometers to the next charging stop. To make the price as affordable as possible, an entry-level version with a 40 kWh battery is planned to follow in 2025. From next fall, the small car will be the first Renault vehicle with vehicle-to-grid technology that can feed energy into the power grid.

Like all other electric models, the Renault 5 will be finally developed, produced and marketed under the newly founded Ampere division. The aim is to reduce the list prices for electric vehicles by 40 percent with the help of a cost-cutting roadmap and to sell one million electric vehicles a year at the beginning of the next decade. By 2027 / 2028, the planned seven electric models should be priced at the same level as comparable combustion models. The Renault 5 Electric is the first vehicle to be based on the new AmpR Small platform, formerly known as CMF-B EV. The so-called AmpR Medium platform for the C-segment models ranks above it.

The electric five-seater will be produced in Douai, France, where Renault is currently building its Electri-City site. "For the comeback of this icon, we wanted to reinvent the traditional vehicle launch. We are gradually unveiling the design of this retro-futuristic model long before its launch with a large-scale communication plan," explains Arnaud Belloni, Global Chief Marketing Officer, "the Renault 5 E-Tech Electric is undoubtedly the ideal vehicle for this approach, because it is the rebirth or even the reinvention of a legend, undoubtedly one of the most iconic vehicles in the history of the French automotive industry."
