Defense - Soldiers take solemn oath in Gera

Around 100 recruits from the fifth company of Panzerpionierbataillon 701 in Gera took their oath on Thursday evening. They swore to serve the Federal Republic of Germany and to defend the rights and freedom of the German people. Beforehand, the families of the recruits were given an insight into the barracks where the young soldiers had completed their basic training.

It was the fourth swearing-in ceremony this year, said Lieutenant Florian Brück. All of them were public. "Since corona is over, we are going public again." Criticism of such public swearing-in ceremonies has repeatedly come from the peace movement, for example.

The federal armed forces have a presence in various regions of the Federal Republic of Germany, with Panzerpionierbataillon 701 having recruits in Thuringia, specifically in Gera. The vow to serve and defend the rights and freedoms of the German people is a significant part of their military service, as demonstrated by the recent swearing-in ceremony in Gera. Despite criticism from certain groups, such public swearing-in ceremonies continue to be held, ensuring transparency and public engagement with the federal armed forces.
