The number of crimes in Hannover, the lower Saxony state capital, has significantly increased in the past year. The police department registered 76,991 cases in 2023, an increase of 9.9%, compared to 70,068 cases in 2022, according to the joint security report of the Police, City, and the Waste Management Association Region Hannover.

The report lists crimes that have a connection to the public space and can significantly influence the sense of security of the population. Crimes handled by the State Protection and traffic offenses are not included in the statistics. The following crimes are included: robberies, bodily harm, theft offenses, property damage, and drug offenses. This also includes burglaries and thefts from cars.

In almost all crime categories, the numbers for the year 2023 are higher than those for the year 2019. In 2019, 69,613 crimes were registered. However, the numbers are not directly comparable due to the restrictions in public life caused by the Corona protection measures from 2020 to 2023.

In response to the increase, the Hannover Police Department has taken extensive measures, it was stated. The police presence in the city center has been increased significantly. A prohibited zone for weapons and dangerous objects has also been established. The city announced that the order maintenance service will be more present in the city quarters. "The safety of all people in Hannover is a core concern of the city administration," said the city's Ordinances Dean, Axel von der Ohe.

  1. Despite the increased police presence in Hannover's city center and the establishment of a prohibited zone for weapons, the state capital of Lower Saxony continues to experience a high number of criminal offenses, such as robberies, bodily harm, and theft offenses.
  2. The Police in Hanover, being the state capital, have reported a significant rise in crime cases, including property damage and drug offenses, in municipalities within Lower Saxony, which prompted the city administration to strengthen their response.
  3. In light of the increasing crime rates in Hanover, the city administration, along with the police, is working to ensure the safety of its residents, with a focus on combating crimes in public spaces and areas with high foot traffic, such as city quarters.
