Second round of the French election begins in overseas territories

In France, voters in the overseas territories were called to the decisive round of the parliamentary election on Saturday. This could pave the way for the first right-wing government of the country since the founding of the current Republic. According to surveys, the formation of three blocks in the National Assembly is also possible, which could hinder the government and plunge the country into a political crisis.

In Metropolitan France, the election takes place on Sunday. French President Emmanuel Macron called for a new election after the triumph of the far-right Party Rassemblement National (RN) in the European election on 9th June. In case of an absolute majority of right-wing populists in the parliament after the election, he might be politically compelled to appoint their party leader Jordan Bardella as Prime Minister.

In the aforementioned parliamentary election in France, the second round took place in some of the overseas territories, potentially influencing the outcome. If the right-wing party gains a significant presence in the second round of elections in these territories, it could strengthen their position in forming a government.
