Qualified iPhone owners can receive $349 through a legal settlement addressing sound problems.

People who had trouble with the audio functions on their iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus between 2016 and 2023 may be eligible for up to $349 in compensation from a 2019 lawsuit in the Northern District of California.

To qualify, you must have reported an issue, like problems with FaceTime, the loudspeaker, Siri, or the voice memo app, or you must have paid for a related repair. Apple denies any wrongdoing, as stated on the Settlement Administration site. The company has not responded to a request for comment.

The problem stemmed from the audio chip inside these phones, which controls the sound coming from speakers or headphones. Apple removed the headphone jack on these models in 2016 to allow for better sound quality, a thinner design, and improved water resistance.

Affected users may receive an email or postcard about the settlement. The deadline to file a claim online is June 3, and the final approval hearing is set for July 18.

This isn't the first lawsuit payout for these iPhone models. Previously, owners of 6, 6 Plus, 6s, 6s Plus, 7, 7 Plus, or SE phones bought before December 21, 2017, were entitled to $25 as part of Apple's settlement of a $500 million class action lawsuit for intentionally slowing down older devices with system upgrades, compelling users to upgrade to more recent iPhones.
