Terrorism - Public Prosecutor General's Office: Case of the terror suspect

Around a week after the arrest of a terror suspect from Wittstock, the public prosecutor's office of the state of Brandenburg has taken over the case. The superior judicial authority has taken over the investigation, said a spokesperson for the public prosecutor's office based in Brandenburg an der Havel on Tuesday. The "Tagesspiegel" reported earlier. Until now, the investigation into the 16-year-old terror suspect had been handled by the public prosecutor's office in Neuruppin. The Central Office for Combating Hate Crime, which is part of the Public Prosecutor General's Office, is now handling the proceedings due to the supra-regional significance of the case, said the spokesperson.

The teenager was arrested last Tuesday in the town of Wittstock/Dosse in the district of Ostprignitz-Ruppin. Together with a teenager from North Rhine-Westphalia, he is said to have planned a terrorist attack on a Christmas market via the Internet. He was remanded in custody.

According to information from security circles, the terror suspect from Wittstock was known to be a criminal. There are already other proceedings against him for criminal offenses.

According to the public prosecutor's office in Düsseldorf, the two young people are said to have agreed to kill visitors to a Christmas market in Leverkusen. They are said to have planned their attack based on the goals and methods of the Islamic State (IS).
