Over half of the electricity comes from renewable sources.

Germany's reliance on wind power as its primary energy source has re-emerged, although coal remains a substantial contributor as well.

Germany's Electricity Production - Over half of the electricity comes from renewable sources.

In Germany, green energy is taking over like a storm! With renewable sources contributing to a whopping 58.4% of the total electricity generated in the first quarter of the year, things are looking greener than ever. The Federal Statistical Office announced this on a Thursday, sharing the news that never before have wind, water, solar, and biogas played such a vital role.

The big player here? You guessed it - wind power. Dominating the game, it made up for 38.5% of the electricity produced in Germany in Q1 of 2024.

Coal, on the other hand, is slowly losing its charm. It's stuck at #2 with a 23% share, but its use has seen a considerable decrease. Compared to the first quarter of 2023, the coal-fired power generation dropped an astounding 28.2%, dropping approximately 11.0 billion kilowatt-hours. As a result, fossil fuels like coal and natural gas didn't play a significant part in the energy mix anymore.

But wait, it gets better. There's been a notable 25.4% decrease in conventional energy sources, contrasted by a nifty 11.6% increase in renewables. It might not sound like a lot, but it equals to a reduction of 7.5% in the total electricity generated in Germany between the first quarters of 2023 and 2024. And that's not even taking into account the gigantic leap from 121.5 billion kilowatt-hours to 131.4 billion kilowatt-hours in 2023! These are some pretty surreal numbers.
