Health - Number of whooping cough cases down in Lower Saxony

The number of whooping cough cases in Lower Saxony is down slightly in 2023 compared to the previous year. According to the Robert Koch Institute, 125 cases of whooping cough have been reported nationwide this year - after 191 last year, the Barmer health insurance company announced on Friday. "Even if the numbers in the state are declining slightly, whooping cough should not be underestimated," said Heike Sander, Managing Director of Barmer in Lower Saxony. It is not a childhood disease, she warned. The health insurance company called on all adults to check their vaccination status against whooping cough.

In Bavaria, for example, the number of whooping cough cases has risen to 703 this year after 412 in the previous year, the insurance company warned. Anyone planning a trip to Denmark should also protect themselves - there are currently a particularly high number of whooping cough cases there. Pertussis, as the medical term is, can last several weeks to months. In addition, unvaccinated people can infect older people and babies, which can lead to serious complications and life-threatening conditions. "Whooping cough is highly contagious. And we cannot rule out a pandemic-related catch-up effect," said Sander.
