New Zealand's emigration reaches record low

New Zealand, often seen as a dream destination for many expats, has reported a record high number of people leaving the country in the first half of the year. A total of 131,200 people left between January and June, according to the country's statistics agency. Around a third of them moved to Australia. Of those who left, 80,174 were New Zealand citizens. The main reasons cited for leaving were rising unemployment, high interest rates, and sluggish economic growth.

While the net migration balance - the number of immigrants minus the number of emigrants - remains high, economists predict that the number of incoming foreign nationals will decrease due to the weaker economy. High cost of living, interest rates, and decreasing job opportunities are dampening the trend.

The New Zealand government has reduced the public service, leading many qualified workers to search for jobs. Meanwhile, Australia is actively seeking skilled workers, particularly in fields like nursing, but also in areas like policing and teaching, even offering relocation packages. This is attractive to many New Zealanders who don't need a visa to work there.

Merrily Allen, a dental administration worker, plans to move with her partner and 14-year-old daughter to Hobart, Australia in early 2025. "There are a lot of opportunities there," she says. "They're always looking for people in my field. I have many friends who have gone there... just for the better job opportunities and lifestyle. Australia seems to have it figured out."

During the COVID-19 pandemic, a historically high number of New Zealanders living abroad returned home. This was partly due to the government's successful COVID-19 containment policies at the time.

Despite the government's efforts to boost the economy, the negative record of high unemployment, high interest rates, and slow economic growth continues to drive people away. Consequently, the negative record of departing New Zealanders is expected to persist, with Australia continuing to be an attractive destination due to its booming job market and relocation incentives.
