New online portal for healthy eating in canteens

The "Canteen Future Brandenburg" project has set up a new online portal for nutrition education for Brandenburg canteens. The aim is to design canteens and cafeterias as places for healthy, sustainable and tasty meals, the Ministry of Consumer Protection announced on Thursday. The aim is to increase the importance of fresh, regional and seasonal foods and thus improve the quality of food.

According to the ministry, 19 organizations with several facilities are participating in the project so far - including daycare centers, schools, canteens, company canteens, hospitals and retirement homes. The offer is aimed at kitchen teams in the form of advice, cooking workshops, excursions and networking events. According to the ministry, 600,000 euros are available for this this year and next year.

According to State Secretary for Consumer Protection Antje Töpfer (The Greens), a healthy diet in communal catering is of central importance: "Nutrition takes place to a large extent in canteens and cafeterias, where children, young people and adults eat every day. This is where the long-term health of many people can be promoted and nutritional habits can be shaped," said Töpfer according to the press release.

The project is part of the "Brandenburg Nutrition Strategy" and was developed by the Ministry of Consumer Protection together with the state government and the Brandenburg Nutrition Council and presented in mid-October. The offer is being implemented by the research and consulting company "Speiseräume" with the support of the ministry.

Additionally, this initiative extends beyond canteens, also focusing on improving nutrition in schools and daycare centers. By incorporating healthy eating habits in these educational settings, we aim to instill good nutritional habits in children from a young age. Furthermore, the project aims to collaborate with hospitals and retirement homes, ensuring that all communal catering facilities promote health through nutrition.
