Net immigration to Germany fell significantly in 2023

The decreasing number led statisticians and statisticians mainly to the reversed immigration from Ukraine. Compared to the previous year, there were 75 percent fewer people from Ukraine who immigrated to Germany. In total, the net immigration to Germany from the European Union was reversed. However, these people still contributed the most with 330,000. People from Asia were second with 287,000 and Africa was third with 61,000.

Since 2005, there has been a net outmigration among German citizens. In 2023, 74,000 more people emigrated than immigrated. The main destinations were, as in previous years, Switzerland, Austria, and the USA.

In terms of internal migrations, Brandenburg profited the most. Slightly over a million people moved across state borders. To Brandenburg, 14,000 more people moved than left. Following Brandenburg were Schleswig-Holstein with a plus of 9,000 and Bavaria with a plus of 6,000.

In 2023, data from Destatis in Wiesbaden, Germany, revealed the highest level of net immigration from Asia, with 287,000 individuals. Despite this, the reversed immigration from Ukraine significantly impacted Germany's net immigration figures, showing a decrease of 75% compared to the previous year. This shift in immigration patterns was primarily noted in the 2023 statistics, placing Ukraine among countries with negative net immigration numbers, contributing to Germany's overall immigration statistics for that year.
