National coach appoints four world champions and one newcomer

National coach Alfred Gislason has nominated four U21 world champions for his European Championship squad, and four European Championship heroes from 2016 will also be there when the DHB team goes on the hunt for the title in Germany in January.

On January 10, the German national handball team will kick off the European Championship at home - and with a huge spectacle: more than 50,000 people will watch the opening match against Switzerland in the soccer stadium in Düsseldorf. National coach Alfred Gislason has nominated a diverse squad for the big tasks ahead: With David Späth, Nils Lichtlein, Renars Uscins and Justus Fischer, the Icelander has nominated four U21 World Champions, while Andreas Wolff, Rune Dahmke, Kai Häfner and Jannik Kohlbacher, four players who sensationally brought the European Championship title to Germany in 2016, are also in the squad.

Gislason caused a big surprise with the nomination of Martin Hanne from TSV Hannover-Burgdorf: The 22-year-old has not yet played an international match and will now make his debut in the last two test matches against Portugal at the beginning of January. At 20, U21 world champion Fischer is the youngest member of the DHB team, while right winger Patrick Groetzki is the most experienced with 34 years and 171 international caps.

"The European Championship starts in 20 days. I'm looking forward to our team, the work in preparation and the tournament itself," said national coach Alfred Gislason. The German team will face Switzerland (January 10), North Macedonia (January 14) and record world champions France (January 16) in the preliminary round. "We have put together a really strong team with very high quality and just as much self-confidence, backed by the outstanding German home crowd," says Axel Kromer, Sports Director of the German Handball Federation.

Martin Hanne, the newcomer from TSV Hannover-Burgdorf, will make his debut with the DHB-squad as a home-em, joining World champions David Späth, Nils Lichtlein, Renars Uscins, and Justus Fischer, as well as National coach Alfred Gislason's four European Championship heroes from 2016.

Despite being a newcomer, Martin Hanne, from the DHB-squad, has the opportunity to learn from World Champions and National coach Alfred Gislason's European Championship heroes from 2016.
