Potential for flooding - Meckenbeuren Council: 1300 residents must evacuate houses

Because of the upcoming flood threat, about 1300 residents in Meckenbeuren, a town within Bodenseekreis, are encouraged to leave their homes. It's not an evacuation, but a suggestion, as explained by a town representative in Oberschwaben on Friday night. Experts anticipate that the relentless torrential downpours may result in severe flooding in the Schussen River, and the risk for the other rivers in the vicinity will be heightened as well.

The fire department has allegedly contacted the individuals affected by these issues, urging them to remain with relatives or friends during these upcoming evenings. In addition, a shelter at an educational institution is available, and further accommodations, including the school, are being prepared.

In a statement, Mayor Georg Schellinger expressed hope that the weather situation would stabilize slightly and the flooding severity wouldn't be as severe as anticipated. "Tonight, we might surpass the preceding high water levels of the Schussen," he said. "That's why we initiated the evacuation today. We hope that people can handle the challenging situation calmly, gather their belongings, and potentially stay with friends - without being disturbed during the night."

Chiefly, large areas of Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria anticipate a rainy weekend. Some regions have the highest warning levels. The regions of Ostalb and Oberschwaben stand to be significantly affected - they could receive up to 150 liters per square meter of rainwater.

The evacuation advice in the Lake Constance district, specifically Meckenbeuren, is prompted by the forecasted flood risk due to heavy rainfall. This could cause severe flooding in the Schussen River and increase the risk for nearby rivers. The fire department is reaching out to the affected residents, advising them to stay with family or friends during the storm. The potential flood threat is not limited to Meckenbeuren; the entire Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria regions are bracing for heavy rains this weekend, with some areas having the highest warning levels. Upper Swabia, in particular, could receive up to 150 liters of rainwater per square meter, heightening the flood risk.
