In the spring season of 2024, Germany witnessed the warmest temperatures since recording began back in 1881. As reported by the German Meteorological Service (DWD) on Friday, Offenbach, the temperature for this spring season reached an exciting 10.8°C, a staggering 3.1°C higher than the internationally accepted reference point of 1961 to 1990. In comparison to the more recent and warmer reference period of 1991 to 2020, the deviation was a notable 1.9°C.

The DWD's spokesperson, Uwe Kirsche, commented on the rising temperatures, stating, "Climate change cannot be ignored. Following the hottest February and March we've ever had, Germany now has the highest spring mean temperature ever recorded."

The monthly temperatures showed extreme variance in this year's spring, with March reaching 7.5°C - a temperature typical of April - and April recording a mind-blowing 30.1°C in the town of Ohlsbach, Baden-Württemberg, matching the current German temperature record. However, this was quickly followed by a cold spell as minus 8.8°C was detected in the Saxon town of Deutschneudorf-Bruderwiese on the 23rd of April.

The spring of 2024 didn't only bring record-breaking temperatures but also extreme rainfall instances, with the DWD highlighting the occurrence in May due to intense thunderstorms. Severe rainfall caused a distressing flood situation in Saarland and Rhineland-Palatinate, as revealed by the service. Nonetheless, eastern Germany was spared, enjoying a relatively dry weather span.

It is predicted that around 235 liters per square meter of rainfall fell nationwide, on average, during spring 2024, markedly higher than the reference point of 186 liters per square meter (1961-1990) and 171 liters per square meter (1991-2020). The southwest of Germany was the wettest with up to 700 liters per square meter of rainfall, while the latter half of May was plagued with heavy rainfall in many German areas. In stark contrast, Lusatia remained relatively dry.

The solar radiation duration lasted for approximately 485 hours on average during spring, slightly above the seasonal average of 467 hours in the 1961-1990 period. However, it experienced a minor negative deviation when juxtaposed with the 1991-2020 reference period and its average of 522 hours. In the northeast, the sun shined for more than 600 hours, while the western middle mountain regions endured less than 400 hours of sunshine.
