Increase in antisemitic incidents observed in Saxony-Anhalt following Hamas assault

Incident reports from Rias highlight a distressing turn of events. For instance, an unfortunate memorial event disrupted by around 30 individuals on October 8th. These intruders shouted "Allahu Akbar" (God is great) and hurled antisemitic slurs at the gathering. Memorial posters for the kidnapped hostages were regularly torn down, as per Rias' updates. Social media was buzzing with unfounded conspiracy theories.

The Jewish community in Sachsen-Anhalt is relatively small, as confirmed by research centers. However, the rising number of reported and recorded incidents is deeply concerning. This has led to a substantial escalation in security concerns for Jewish individuals and communities in Sachsen-Anhalt.

Antisemitism was already a prevalent issue in the daily lives of the Jewish community prior to October 7th, primarily associated with Israel. Furthermore, Jews and Jewish women were often portrayed as adversarial imagery. Baseless conspiracy theories about Jewish power were propagated, and the memory of National Socialism's atrocities was repeatedly disrespected. Antisemitic aggression originated from all political spectrums, it was further emphasized.

This was the inaugural Rias annual report for Sachsen-Anhalt. Wolfgang Schneiss, the point of contact for Jewish life and antisemitism in Sachsen-Anhalt, declared: "Antisemitic incidents are a part of the everyday struggles faced by Jewish men and women in our country, limiting their sense of life and safety."
