Hamann criticism spares "poorest dog" at BVB

Borussia Dortmund will head into the Bundesliga winter break with a terrible second half against Mainz 05. But just because the ball isn't rolling doesn't mean the debates have stopped. Coach Edin Terzić is the subject of heated debate. He also has his back.

For Borussia Dortmund captain Emre Can, the question of a coach is not an issue despite his poor performances in the Bundesliga. When asked about his relationship with Edin Terzić after the game on Sky, the German international replied with a smile: "Good. We're still in the Champions League, it's not always down to the coach. It has nothing to do with the coach if the ball hits the crossbar."

After the disappointing 1:1 (1:1) against FSV Mainz, BVB have only won one of their last eight games in the Bundesliga and are now winless in six competitive matches. They are also out of the DFB Cup. "It's not going well at the moment. It's simply the decisive moments that aren't on our side at the moment. I can't blame the boys, they're giving everything, they want to win, they want to be successful. But it's not working at the moment," said Can. The aim over Christmas is to clear their heads and then attack again in the new year. In the top flight, BVB finished top of their group and made it through to the round of 16.

Chief defender Mats Hummels addressed the fans via Instagram. "It's a huge honor to be able to play in front of these fans in this stadium. And it could be so much fun. I hope we get to go there again," wrote the 35-year-old.

Hamann: "Left the coach out in the rain"

Meanwhile, TV pundit Dietmar Hamann strongly criticized Borussia Dortmund's stars and believes their Champions League qualification is also at risk in view of their poor performances. "They won't finish in the top four the way they performed today," said the Sky pundit. The former international excluded coach Terzic, who is under extreme pressure, from his criticism: "I think the coach is the poorest dog at the moment because he has been let down too often by the players."

Rather, managing director Hans-Joachim Watzke and sporting director Sebastian Kehl should have had a much clearer influence on the professional footballers and held them to account. "The coach was also left out in the rain somewhere. The coach was always the lone caller and he was always left alone," said Hamann, adding: "You have to tell the players that they earn well and play in front of 80,000 spectators every week. The players also have a responsibility and they have rarely lived up to it in the last eight weeks." In the second half against Mainz, BVB played as if they had "taken leave of their senses" and you could see that the team was "totally insecure".

Hamann would have liked Watzke or Kehl to "go there at some point and say: 'Watch out, boys - that's not how it works! The coach is the poorest dog. He protected them, supported them and did everything for these players." BVB have only been able to impress in the top flight this season, where they finished top of their group and qualified for the round of 16. In the DFB Cup, they were knocked out in the round of 16 against VfB Stuttgart. In the Bundesliga, there was only one win from the last eight games.

In the coming days, there will be an analysis of the past few weeks - with Watzke, Kehl, Terzic and BVB advisor Matthias Sammer. It remains to be seen whether the bosses will continue to stand by their coach. Terzic says he has no doubts about staying at BVB despite his team's continuing slump.
