## Planned Nato Headquarters in Germany to Aid Ukrainian Forces

There are plans to establish a Nato headquarters in Germany to coordinate weapon deliveries and train Ukrainian forces. Apparently, Wiesbaden has been selected as the site for this project, since it houses the European headquarters of the US military, which had previously taken on the responsibility of coordination.

The Nato deployment project was approved and confirmed by the North Atlantic Council recently. It was led by a Three-Star General who will report directly to the Supreme Allied Commander Europe of Nato.

Preparations for Nato Assistance to Ukraine

So far, the US military has been in charge of the support tasks, setting up a roughly 300-strong unit known as the Security Assistance Group-Ukraine (SAG-U) in the European headquarters in Wiesbaden, Hesse. This base was established towards the end of 2022.

The alliance's decision to set up a new Nato project might be seen as a precaution in case Donald Trump returns as US president from 2025. He has in the past raised doubts about the US's support for Ukraine in its defense against Russia. This move by the alliance aims to circumvent any political shifts in Washington that may affect coordination of weapons delivery and training for Ukrainian armed forces.

Hungary's Opt-out

Hungary is not expected to participate in this new Nato project. Prime Minister Viktor Orban's government fears that the alliance could be driven into a direct confrontation with Russia through this project. In the past, several other Nato countries were also reluctant to contribute more due to fears of escalating tension. However, their views have changed, and most countries now consider the risk as manageable.

To ensure consensus, Hungary was reassured that they wouldn't be required to contribute financially or personally to the project.

Name Dispute

The project is currently known within the alliance as "Nato Security Assistance and Training for Ukraine" (NSATU). While most Nato countries voted for the name "Nato Mission Ukraine," the German government preferred a different name out of concern that "Mission" could be misinterpreted as deploying troops to Ukraine. This could potentially become a tool for Russian propaganda against the alliance.

As per the operations plan, preparations can now begin for the new project. The ideal goal is to kickstart it in July, when the Feder Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) and other 31 Nato heads of state and government meet in Washington for a summit.
