German government sponsors World Championships in rhythmic gymnastics

The federal government is funding the 2026 World Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships in Berlin. The Budget Committee decided late on Thursday evening to contribute around 2.5 million euros towards the costs.

"We are delighted that, with the World Championships in rhythmic gymnastics, we are putting the spotlight on a sport in which German athletes have recently achieved great international success," explained FDP budget politician Thorsten Lieb. At the World Championships in Valencia in August, Darja Varfolomeev won five gold medals.

It was therefore right to finance the major event with federal funds. "Anyone who is successful in sport also receives financial support from the budget legislator," said Lieb.

The upcoming World Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships in 2026 will be held in Berlin, with the German Household contributing significantly to its funding. Last year, German gymnast Darja Varfolomeev brought home five gold medals from the World Championships in Valencia, showcasing the nation's prowess in rhythmic gymnastics, making it a worthy recipient of Bundestag's financial backing.
