French President Macron Receives Westphalian Peace Prize

France and Germany have made numerous attempts to avert war politically. However, their efforts have been unsuccessful in Russia, as stated by Steinmeier, who also mentioned Macron's attempts to maintain dialogue with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the beginning of the Ukraine conflict.

Steinmeier commended Macron's commitment to Franco-German relations, saying, "You're always ready to come to Germany, spark conversations, and even help push us outside our comfort zones from time to time." Macron strongly believes in the Franco-German balance, which must be reestablished whenever Europe intends to advance.

The Bundestag president also responded to Macron's unwavering spirit, referencing the statement hanging in Macron's office: "Those who believe it's impossible are asked not to disrupt those who are attempting." Macron aims to awaken, occasionally with quite forceful language. "You've consistently displayed: We're in control of our destiny," Steinmeier said.

The prize was bestowed upon Macron about a year ago. The ceremony was postponed since the planned state visit for 2023 was canceled due to riots in France.

The prize is reminiscent of the Westphalian Peace Treaty of 1648, which concluded the Thirty Years' War. It is given out every two years in Münster's town hall in two categories. This year's youth prize was given to the German-Polish Youth Work.

Following the award ceremony, Steinmeier invited his guest to a lunch, marking the end of the three-day state visit in Germany. Macron subsequently traveled to Meseberg for the Franco-German Council of Ministers with Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD). The primary topics will focus on European defense and competitiveness. Although Germany and France have some disparities on these topics.
