Gymnastics - Former gymnast Bui candidate for IOC Athletes' Commission

Former gymnast Kim Bui is applying for a place on the Athletes' Commission of the International Olympic Committee. The 34-year-old from Stuttgart is on the list of candidates confirmed by the IOC Executive Board. This was announced by the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) and the World Gymnastics Federation (Fig) on Thursday. A total of 32 active and former top athletes are applying for a position on this committee, including US athletics icon Allyson Felix. The election will take place next year at the Olympic Games in Paris.

She is delighted about the official announcement of her candidacy by the IOC and wants to convince as many athletes as possible in Paris "that I will actively stand up for their interests within the IOC," said Kim Bui in a statement from the DOSB. The Stuttgart-based athlete resigned after the 2022 European Championships in Munich and finishing third with the team.

"The Fig is delighted that former artistic gymnast Kim Bui from Germany is on this list after the IOC Executive Board accepted a proposal from the DOSB," the world gymnastics federation announced, wishing the former German Gymnastics Federation athlete spokesperson the best for her bid. "We are keeping our fingers crossed for Kim Bui that she will be able to prevail next year," said DOSB President Thomas Weikert.

According to the DOSB, four places on the current 23-member Athletes' Commission will be filled in Paris. Olympic fencing champion Britta Heidemann (40) was elected to the committee in Rio de Janeiro in 2016 and will step down next summer after eight years.
