- Fire on yacht in Baltic Sea, occupying sea rescuers
Rescuers saved two men and a child from a burning sailboat on the Baltic Sea. The skipper, his son, four-year-old granddaughter, and a dog were about 1.9 kilometers east of Schleimünde when a fire started in the engine room, according to the German Maritime Search and Rescue Service. The sailors sent a distress call, but the men later managed to extinguish the fire with a handheld fire extinguisher.
The approximately eight-meter-long sailboat reached the emergency harbor of the pilot island of Schleimünde, where it was taken over by the rescuers. As one of the group complained of breathing problems, the two men and the child were precautionarily taken to land by a rescue boat due to suspected smoke inhalation. All were taken to a hospital.
The rescued individuals were grateful for being brought to safety on a sturdy rescue ship. Upon arrival at the hospital, it was discovered that the damage from the fire and smoke inhalation required immediate medical attention for the man with breathing issues.
