"A little relief through a football mega-event is desperately needed," says social psychologist Dagmar Schediwy. "I find football to be a real symbol of hope and togetherness as well as of success and victory."

It's unclear if this trend will repeat itself. "This assumes that the supporters want to express their enthusiasm and belonging," says Dagmar Schediwy. "This is typical of a mega event like the Euros."

While it may not be like 2006 due to the different times, it will still provide a great opportunity for fans to come together and enjoy football. "The crucial thing about such an event is that we can forget about all the sadness and the fears for a while and just have fun," adds Dagmar Schediwy. "That's the best way to escape reality, even if only briefly."
And what about safety?
Safety concerns are always present at such events, but the organizers are prepared. "We are working closely with the security authorities to ensure that the Euros run without any problems and with mutual respect between fans and opponents," says Dagmar Schediwy. "We're hoping for a rallying effect and peaceful football celebrations."
During the summer of 2006, cars decorated with flags on the side mirror represented Germany's newfound happiness. However, Schediwy issues a cautionary statement: This time, it won't just be football enthusiasts parading the streets with black, red, and gold flags; it'll also be right-wing groups and parties. "Cheering on one's national pride openly" might no longer be "acceptable." Schediwy conducted interviews with Germany fans at fan miles during the 2006 World Cup, the 2008 European Championship, and the 2010 World Cup, and published her findings in the 2012 book "Totally Chill in Black, Red, and Gold?"
