Elderly citizen penalized for assaulting Green Party politician in Lower Saxony

The 66-year-old fiercely denied the allegations to the courthouse representative. Nonetheless, two eyewitness accounts and photos persuaded the court that he verbally abused a politician at the end of May during a public rally and slightly wounded her arm.

Based on his own admissions, Kollenrott experienced physical discomfort for several days afterwards, and the psychological fallout from such an incident was also substantial. This violent act against democracy was deemed intolerable by the judge, as stated in her verdict. However, the judgment is not final until legally executed.

After the incident, numerous political figures, including Lower Saxony's Minister President Stephan Weil (SPD), publicly stood by Kollenrott. The city council and authorities of Göttingen also forcefully denounced the attack.

Over the past few weeks, there have been several attacks on politicians.
