Economic trill at Tiktok level

A Berlin bike courier becomes the richest person in the world overnight. His mission: to save the world. What looks like an interesting idea on paper turns into nonsense with lots of caricatures in the "One Billion Dollars" series.

The author Andreas Eschbach published his successful novel "One Billion Dollars" in 2001. The story about New York pizza delivery man John Salvatore Fontanelli, who becomes the richest person in the world thanks to an inheritance, has many interesting ideas that make the reader think. More than 20 years later, the work is now available as a six-part series for streaming on Paramount+.

New York becomes Berlin and the plot of the novel from 1995 is moved to 2023. The basic idea - one person tries to save the world with a trillion dollars - still seems like an interesting idea, but in the series it turns into a colorful action comedy on the level of a Tiktok clip. Even talents such as Greta Scacchi, Oliver Masucci and Philip Froissant can hardly counteract the clichés and caricatures in the production.

A detailed review of "A Billion Dollars" by Ronny Rüsch and Axel Max - now in a new episode of the ntv podcast "Oscars & Raspberries". Also included: the tragicomedy "Spoiler Alarm", the film biography "Nyad" and the classic film "Menace II Society".
