Christmas market - Dresden Striezelmarkt opens

Dresden's Striezelmarkt has opened its doors for the 589th time. After an ecumenical church service in the Kreuzkirche, the festive spectacle on the Altmarkt was traditionally opened on Wednesday afternoon. According to the organizers, Germany's oldest Christmas market was illuminated. The almost 15-metre-high Erzgebirge pyramid was symbolically pushed into place.

More than 200 decorated stalls await visitors until December 24. There are also around 180 program items, including miners' orchestras, trombone choirs and puppet shows. One highlight is the Stollen Festival, which is celebrated on December 9. During a parade through Dresden's old town, a giant stollen baked according to a traditional recipe is presented. The XXL stollen is then sold in 500 gram pieces for ten euros each. Most of the proceeds are donated to a good cause.

The Christmas tree at the Striezelmarkt this year comes from Pirna. It is a 55-year-old Colorado fir, which was felled at the beginning of November and brought to Dresden.
