Niklas Kaul, the reigning champion, is in 13th place with 4,139 points after the first day of the decathlon at the European Athletics Championships in Rome. However, he's optimistic about improving his position tomorrow. Kaul won the European Championship two years ago in Munich through the same process. This is his first complete decathlon of the Olympic season.

Germany's Manuel Eitel is currently the top German athlete, ranked sixth with 4,269 points. He earned these points after completing 100 meters, long jump, shot put, high jump, and 400 meters events. Felix Wolter comes in seventh position with 4,259 points, while Tim Nowak ranks 15th with 4,087 points.

Sander Skotheim of Norway is in the lead, scoring 4,566 points. Despite his current standing, Kaul still has a chance to finish among the top spots. In the 2019 World Championships in Doha, Kaul had 4,164 points at the halfway point and was in 11th place.
