Religious institution - Corpus Christi Processions: Walking and Via Water

On Thursdays, Catholics celebrate Corpus Christi with grand processions. In various churches, tens of thousands of participants are anticipated, walking the streets with music and flags.

For instance, at Essen, Bishop Franz-Josef Overbeck holds a Mass for the believers on the Burgplatz in front of the cathedral (at 10:00 am), and then the procession commences. Similarly, at Cologne's Cathedral, Cardinal Rainer Maria Woelki attends an open-air service initially. In Cologne as well, a boat procession (at 11:00 am) proceeds. During the traditional "Muelheimer Godstracht," many brightly decorated boats and ships sail on the Rhine.

On Corpus Christi, believers reflect upon the Last Supper when Jesus, as per custom, presented his disciples with bread and wine as his physical form and blood. As the "Body of Christ," the consecrated host is transported through the streets in a monstrance during these processions.
