China threatens retaliation on EU pig imports amid escalating e-car tariffs dispute.

The Department of Trade in Beijing revealed on a Monday briefing that an inquiry will commence, following a request from the Chinese Pork Farmers Guild, who voiced concerns about the country's pork meat and related products imports from the European Union (EU) being subject to Anti-Dumping laws within the People's Republic of China.

In a turn of events, the EU's executive arm declared an increase in tariffs up to 38% on Chinese cars, citing allegations of excessive subsidies provided to local automakers, which supposedly hinders European auto manufacturers. The EU Commission, under pressure from the German government, allowed a transitional period for negotiations with Chinese authorities and companies, effective early July, before implementing the new tariffs.

The response from Beijing was swift and stern, slamming the EU's "protectionist" moves as damaging to European interests. The Chinese media has been vocal about retaliatory tariffs on EU exports, such as pork meat or dairy products. It's worth noting that, in January, China initiated an Anti-Dumping investigation into brandy, a move that was interpreted as a direct message to France, a strong advocate for the implementation of car tariffs at the EU level.
