The town of Heiligenhafen in Ostholstein district is embarking on a rather unique experiment. From now on, locals and visitors can use the city buses for free to reduce car traffic, especially during the summer months. The municipality estimates this will cost around 25,000 Euros per year, according to the "Lübecker Nachrichten," quoting Mayor Kuno Brandt. The idea was proposed by the Bürger für Heiligenhafen faction in the municipal council last year. The "Lübecker Nachrichten" had previously reported on this.

The goal of the action is to encourage more people to switch to public transportation, Mayor Kuno Brandt told the "Lübecker Nachrichten." In 2023, 3703 people used public transportation in Heiligenhafen. In the previous year, this number was 5445.

By embracing this initiative, locals and visitors in Heiligenhafen now have the freedom to utilize the city's buses at no cost, contributing to a decrease in private vehicle usage, particularly during the summer. To keep the buses operating freely, the municipality is anticipating an annual expenditure of approximately 25,000 Euros.
