Composer - Aribert Reimann receives music author award for lifetime achievement

The composer Aribert Reimann has been awarded the Gema German Music Authors' Prize for his life's work. The 87-year-old is considered one of the most important representatives of contemporary music. Reimann has "uncompromisingly developed his own musical language", the jury said in tribute to the artist in a statement on Tuesday. "His proximity to the human voice makes vocal music and music theater a focal point of his extensive oeuvre."

Reimann's works are performed worldwide. He probably had his greatest success with the opera "Lear", which premiered in Munich in 1978 and which he wrote for the baritone Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. Dozens of new productions of this work have been staged around the world. In addition to operas, his oeuvre also includes orchestral pieces, chamber music and songs.

The award means an incredible amount to him, Reimann was quoted as saying in the press release. "Every composer should find their own language. I have succeeded in that to some extent."

The Berliner will receive his award at the beginning of February in the capital. With the German Music Authors' Prize, Gema honors composers and lyricists who are often overshadowed by performers because they are not on stage themselves.
